Incentive Travel for Sales Teams: What Really Works

Bonuses still matter, but the experiences a team shares tend to outlast the number on a paycheck. Cristina Medeiros on what actually makes incentive travel…

We are a Virtuoso Member travel agency. If you book through us, we may earn compensation from the hotel or travel supplier (typically at no additional cost to you). All of our recommendations are made wholeheartedly with the intent of helping travelers discover the world authentically and responsibly.

How Incentive Travel Motivates High-Performing Sales Teams

Recognition has changed.

Years ago, companies measured success almost exclusively through bonuses and commission checks. Those rewards still matter, but many organizations have discovered that the experiences people share often leave a far greater impression than the numbers printed on a paycheck. That shift is why incentive travel for sales teams has become one of the most requested programs I plan.

And it’s one of my favorite kinds of work.

Every Program Starts With a Different Story

Sometimes it’s a sales team that exceeded every target. Sometimes it’s a group of top performers who have spent an entire year competing toward a common goal. Other times it’s about celebrating a milestone after months of hard work and giving people the opportunity to step away from their daily routines, reconnect with colleagues, and simply enjoy what they’ve accomplished together.

The destination certainly plays a role. But what people remember most rarely begins with the view from their room.

What Sales Teams Actually Remember

They remember arriving and realizing every detail had already been taken care of.

They remember conversations during dinner that would never have happened back at the office. They remember exploring somewhere new with colleagues who had previously only met through video calls.

They remember feeling appreciated.

Those moments don’t happen by accident.

The Property Has to Work Behind the Scenes

Behind every successful incentive trip is months of thoughtful planning. Choosing the right destination means balancing inspiration with practicality. The experience has to feel extraordinary, but it also has to work operationally.

Flights need to make sense for travelers arriving from different cities. Transfers should be smooth. The property needs the right balance of accommodations, meeting space, dining venues, and experiences, and all of it should work together naturally so guests spend their time enjoying the program rather than thinking about logistics.

This is where I get particular. When I’m evaluating a property for a mid-sized sales group, I’m looking at whether the meeting space can actually hold the group without feeling like a conference hall, and whether there’s somewhere to go the moment the session ends. A property like Charleston Place is the kind I’d look at closely for a program like that — it carries substantial function space across a number of separate venues, plus dining, a spa, and a walkable historic setting just outside the door. That combination matters. It means a group can run a morning session and be somewhere completely different by lunch without anyone getting on a bus.

For teams based out west, there are also luxury resorts across the Southwest built for corporate groups that handle this balance well.

The Best Programs Reflect the Company’s Culture

I also believe the best incentive trips reflect who the company actually is.

Some organizations celebrate with adventurous itineraries filled with outdoor experiences. For that kind of group, I’d be looking at somewhere like Gateway Canyons Resort & Spa in western Colorado — a property set among red rock canyons between Moab and Grand Junction, built around outdoor adventure and well suited to group getaways. A team that bonds by doing things together will get more out of a place like that than out of any ballroom.

Others prefer a slower pace centered around wellness, exceptional dining, and meaningful conversations. That’s a different search entirely. Waldorf Astoria Park City is the kind of property I’d evaluate for that group — an alpine setting at the base of Canyons Village where the wellness programming and the surroundings do a lot of the work, and where the pace naturally slows down.

And for the companies who want something genuinely different, I’ve had groups fall in love with the idea of a sailing itinerary aboard a ship like Virgin Voyages.

There isn’t one formula that fits every team. Which is why understanding the people behind the program always comes before selecting the destination.

Where the Itinerary Comes Together

One of my favorite parts of the planning process is watching an itinerary take shape.

A welcome reception becomes the beginning of new friendships. A shared excursion turns into the story everyone tells when they return home. A farewell dinner becomes the perfect ending to a week that reminded people why they love working for their company.

None of that happens on its own. It comes from sequencing — knowing what to schedule on night one versus night three, when to leave a block of time completely open, and when not to program anything at all. That instinct is a large part of what working with a luxury travel advisor actually buys you on a group program.

Long after the luggage is unpacked, those memories remain.

The Best Incentive Trips Inspire the Next One

Incentive travel for sales teams isn’t really about the reward at the end of the year. It’s about what the reward tells people — that the work was seen, that the effort registered, that someone thought carefully about how to say thank you.

The best incentive trips don’t simply reward performance.

They inspire the next one.

Incentive Travel FAQ

What is incentive travel?
Incentive travel is a company-funded trip awarded to employees, sales teams, or partners as recognition for hitting a performance goal. Unlike a standard corporate meeting, the experience itself is the reward — the itinerary is designed around celebration, connection, and time away from the daily routine, even when a short business session is built in.

How far in advance should we plan an incentive trip?
As early as you reasonably can. Room blocks, meeting space, private venues, and group air all get harder to secure as the date gets closer, and the strongest properties for group programs tend to commit their space furthest out. A longer runway also gives you room to adjust if the qualifying group ends up larger or smaller than projected.

How is incentive travel different from a corporate retreat?
A corporate retreat is usually built around work — strategy sessions, planning, team development — with leisure time layered in. An incentive trip inverts that. The experience is the point, and any business content is kept light and intentional. The two can overlap, but they call for very different itineraries and often very different properties.
